£20 if you can help fix this today

$

I will paypal over £20 to someone's email account if you can explain it clear and unambiguous terms how I can get a 'bricked' hudl back to life again.
I have outlined the issue on this thread

Originally I rooted it and removed a variety of Tesco rubbish (I cannto recall what)
six months of perfect use follow.
Last week a routine clean-up with Android Assistant rendered it unusable.
I did a factory re-install and now it is stuck downloading 5.1 and not being able to install it
RKTools (inc the config file edit) will not detect the device even though it is seen in Windows.

I'll give this until 8pm and then it is going in the bin.

Stuck in 5.1 update loop

I have a Hudl2 (previously with Kitkat). After a routine Android Assistant clean-up it is suddenly hanging on bootup.
I have done a factory wipe and now when re-installing it keeps downloading (and failing to install) 5.1
Note, I had previously rooted the Hudl about a year ago to get rid of the god-awful interface.
Attached is the error I am continually getting. Can I install 5.1 manually (from adb ? - if so how) and thus by-pass this issue?

Cheers guys.

Update Loop - Tried Everything

I am a super newbie and be spending the last 24 hours trying to fix my daughters Hudl 2 update loop. Here is a little history of what happened:-

1)Always seemed to have lack of storage so rooted to remove Tesco apps but still felt way too many remained

2)OK for a while but recently it seemed around 6gb had disappeared and wanted to update anyway so tried to update forgetting it was rooted.

3)Update failed so removed root by the menu in Supersu (i think this is all I did).

4)Tried again and failed

5)Did some research and read a full reset should sort, but didnt. Now stuck in loop.

I am on 4.4 with a build 20150529.110309, if that means anything. I have tried to do a few things by transferring updates etc to the SD card of Hudl. I have been able to access the developer menu using the google hack.

I have tried to understand what people are requesting to try on other posts, but nothing is successful or i just simply cannot follow it. I really have no idea when it comes to Hudl's what I am doing. If anyone can give me advice please dont assume I know anything, as likely I dont.

I have read a number of posts where people had the same problem, but none of the recommended threads helped me. I know how to access sd card on Hudl, I can connect Hudl to pc, so with that in mind, what do I need to do??

Thanks guys.

Hudl 2 distorted speakers

Hey guys

Turns out I've been a member for a while but only just getting active so hey!

I recently got a  Hudl 2 primary to use as a media tablet and for light  gaming.

I've got an issue though and shy of one review I can't find it replicated anywhere. Pretty simple though, the audio is very very distorted if I go above roughly 50% using any of the Dolby effects. Anyone else with this issue?

OK so how can we get Lollipop rooted ?

I've downloaded the latest image that was posted here http://loadbalancing.modaco.com/download.php?file=hudl2_ota_rel.android-build.20150803.092218_to_rel.android-build.20150917.142239.zip and the idea is to learn a bit about how the update is put together and to see if it is possible to modify it.

I don't know very much about Android but I have reasonable experience with Linux, so hopefully the learning curve won't be too bad.

Step 1. The package is unzipped and explored.

Step 2. Try to mount the boot.img

quad hudl2# simg2img boot.img boot.raw

Invalid sparse file format at header magi
Failed to read sparse file

As you can see failure at the first attempt.

What I hope will happen is that a few people will chip in and we will be able to get some progress made, and at the very least we will all learn something.

Any ideas?

Boot image from USB

Hey folks,

Thought I'd get involved with the rooting, installing other OSs etc etc.

This might sound completely and utterly obvious but given the chip is Intel and it runs on Baytrail, has anyone tried booting a bootable ISO from a USB?

I'm currently making one now, however I've seen other people have success on Baytrail Android tablets (no specific model has been mentioned) by using a USB stick, booatable via an ISO installation file plugged in via usb-OTG. I'll play around, see if I can find anything. If anyone has tried this let me know!

HUDL dead?

Hi gang,

Non-rooted HUDL 2 here. Lollipop.

Daughter was playing Monument Valley on my HUDL 2 yesterday and turned the screen off while she was having tea.

Returned to it about 15 minutes later and HUDL appeared to be dead, I assumed a flat battery.

However, the light won't come on when I plug it into a power supply and it wont turn on regardless of what I do. I have tried multiple power supplies including the supplied one......no light, nothing.

I even left it on the power overnight in case it was badly drained, nothing.

Any thoughts? Is it possible for this to just randomly brick?

Anoth HUDL2 in 5.1 Update Loop - Novice Needs Help Please

HI,

My daughter's HUDL had a message tellng me that Android update 5.1 was ready to install.  Having done a recent big update I thought it was just a small update and went ahead.  The tablet won't boot past the boot logo with the flashing start.  So I thought I'll just go into recovery mode and reset the thing.  No can do.  I get a box with "Power off", "Normal boot", "restart bootloader" and "recovery mode".  If I use the volume keys to go to recovery mode and press the power key it goes through a strange boot process that brings you back to the menu I started from.  In other words I can't get it into recovery.

Is there a way to get it to reset via other means?  I've heard of ADB and TWRP but not used them.  I don't want to root the thing just get it working again!

thanks for any help.

Game Recommendations for the Hudl2...

Thought I'd start a thread where peeps can post their game recommendations, mainly for HD games that run well on the Hudl2.

I'll make the first recommendation for a game that's just been updated for x86 compatibility, it's a very playable game with the right balance of action and tactics. Available on the Play Store it's called

Space Marshalls, cost is £3.99...a tad pricey but there's no in-app crap and process is aided by upgrades that you find within each level.

The touch controls take a little getting used to but work well and it has support for game controllers, music and sound are well done too, as are the graphics.

Over 150 views and not one reply, does no-one play games?

I have installed the game fine, but on first run it needs to download the data file. But seems to crash EVERYTIME and it wont run at all.

Bought the Hudl for my son and he is obsessed with the game so any help please? :)

hi i have triplet boys aged 6 who each  have a hudl2. one of them (the hudls) is goosed.

i have tried the factory reset and it wont boot up, it initially stopped whilst it was getting app certificates . now it doesnt even get that far & screen starts getting tiny white rectangles wizzing about on it and the hudl shuts down

i cleared the cache.

in the recovery menu , which I can occassionally  get to , it has options to do with external storage and adb (whatever that is)

not sure if its on lollipop, kitkat or ?

so the questions I think I'm asking for help with is how should I proceed?

how do i identify what version of android its on?

how do i recover it using external storage or adb?

any help would be appreciated and feel free provide as much idiot's guidance as possible!

Cheers  & thanks in  advance.

Hudl 2 stock firmware needed for 3E recovery

$

Hi

System upgrade failed (downloaded but kept giving an assert failed message when attempting to patch something from the bootloader/recovery)

I erased all user data/factory reset, thinking something on it might be causing the problem

Now it seems I have no firmware at all, it just boots straight into the stock recovery -.-

My question is, where can I find the official signed firmware for flashing from recovery (or some other bootloader mode)? I can see no sign of any firmware or recovery procedure for it anywhere...

Thanks

Hudl 2 charging problems

$

My Hudl 2 is taking several days to charge!  I am using the original charger and cable and installed Battery Monitor Widget to see what was going on.  The ma flow is constantly red and showing minus figures and I often get the message about "insufficient power to charge device".  I did not have this problem before I made the mistake of upgrading the o/s to Lollipop.  If there was a way to return it to KitKat - I would do it, but I believe even a factory reset will not achieve this.  Should I buy a new charge and cable - if so, does it have to be the Tesco one or will another brand suffice.

Would appreciate any advice.  I loved my Hudl when I first had it but I have had nothing but grief since upgrading it.  I swear I can see the battery actually draining when I am using it!  I have trawled various websites and made all sorts of recommendated changes to preserve battery life but I think Lollipop is just a disaster in this respect.

Hudl 2 red light but not charging

My Hudl 2 shows a red light when it is plugged into the mains; however it does not appear to be charging, as the percentage is not increasing. I usually power it off when I am not using it so that there is nothing to drain the battery in the background while it is charging.  When I power it back on, the percentage has not altered.  I downloaded a battery widget which shows that it is plugged in, but is not showing a charging rate.  Occasionally it will suddenly come up with a reading, and currently shows 2 mins 13 seconds - which I assume means it is going to take this long to charge 1%.  Any movement of the Hudl and cable usually results in the reading vanishing.  I did a factory reset this morning as a member who replied to an earlier post suggested it would cure the charging problems; however, it has made no difference.  I still occasionally get the message I had before about "insufficient power to charge device" so I can only assume either the usb charging socket is faulty; the cable is faulty; or the charger is faulty.  I did not have any of these problems with the original operating system - it all started when I made the mistake of upgrading it to Lollipop.

Avoiding Lollipop upgrade

I have just managed to locate and buy a new Hudl 2 because Lollipop pretty much 'killed' my old one.  I do not want to upgrade the new one to Lollipop but am unsure as to how to avoid it.  When I boot it up it tells me that an update is available - the only choice open to me is to download it.  If I do this, will I then get a choice as to whether or not to install it or will it just do it anyway regardless of whether or not I want it?

Can anybody advise please.

Is my Hudl2 dead?

Hi everyone!

I've had my Hudl2 since about October, and it's all been working fine. I hadn't used it for about a month until last night. I charged it up and turned it on. The unlock screen was corrupted, so I rebooted as turning things off and on is a fried and tested method of getting things to work :) but then it seemed to be stuck in a loop, never reaching a useable state.

Eventually a recovery menu appeared, I decided I may as well wipe it and start fresh, so I did.....it still never reached a useable state and kept rebooting. So I wiped it a few times and still it seemed to be stuck in a boot loop.

So I wiped it one more time and now nothing, it won't turn on, there's no charging light when it's plugged in, holding in the power button does nothing, holding in volume up and power also does nothing.

So is it dead? If not what plan of action do I have?

Morning.

I'm having an odd issue with Snapchat. It starts up and loads correctly however when I try to log in it says it had an issue communicating with the server.

Oddly enough I'm able to create a new account and it will work that way. Any Ideas?

Screen Cracked!

Hi guys,

Screen has cracked on the Hudl2.  I now have the crazy trippy LCD look where colours are all over the place, and can't actually see much on the display correctly.

Any ideas, where to get a screen replacement, and steps to replace the screen?

Thanks,

Kasam

Google Play Services update not compatible with this version

I factory reset both my Hudl 2s yesterday and after updating all apps got a update google play services message when opening any google app. The problem is that google play services won't update as it's "not compatible with this version". I have reset all google apps to their factor version as a fix but don't know if there is a workaround. Has anyone else had this problem?

Bypass forced lollipop update on setup wizard

I factory reset my (already rooted) device, which was running KitKat, and it was driving me insane how the hudl's setup wizard was forcing me to download and install the Lollipop update. I managed to find a way around it, and since I hadn't seen anyone post a method here on how to do that, I thought that I'd post it to help out anyone else in the same predicament.

NOTE: THIS REQUIRES YOUR DEVICE TO ALREADY BE ROOTED PRIOR TO FACTORY RESET (although maybe you can flash the rooted image file and then try this but I'm not sure)

Well, after some fiddling I've managed to find a way around the forced update for a first time install.

  1. First off, wipe the device from recovery.
  2. Boot up and select 'Add Network' from the wifi selection screen.
  3. Hold down the microphone key on the google keyboard and select the settings icon and select the settings icon.  This will show 'Input Options'.
  4. Select 'Google Keyboard Settings'
  5. Select 'About Google Keyboard'
  6. Select 'Open-source licences'
  7. Highlight some text with a long press then select 'WEB SEARCH' from the top right
  8. This will take you to the Google Now search page and show a not connected error.
  9. Type 'Settings' into the search box and select the settings page from the drop down.

From here you can enable developer mode, enable adb and fix any stupid changes to the system partition that you might have made (whoops :P )

There's probably a shorter route than this but I'm just pretty happy to have the chance to repair the damage :D

After this, you should be able to successfully enable "USB debugging" in "Developer options" which will allow you to use adb. Connect your hudl to your computer (make sure you have the ADB drivers installed), open command prompt, type in "adb devices" and a prompt should appear on your device asking you to confirm the debugging. Accept it.

Go back to the setup wizard and continue with it, up until the point where it informs you that there's a new update available - BUT DO NOT BEGIN THE DOWNLOAD.

Instead, inside command prompt type "adb shell" (make sure you have ADB tools installed) which will start a shell, and then elevate it to root using "su". A prompt from SuperSU should appear on your device, asking to allow root permissions for ADB shell - accept it.

Then in command prompt type "pm disable hudl.ota", the response should be "Package hudl.ota new state: disabled".

Then, you want to kill the process, to do this you must figure out its process id. Type in "ps | grep hudl.ota" which should return you information about the hudl.ota process. You want to read off the second value of the hudl.ota line, starting from the left (it's the number next to system).

Once you have this id, type in "kill IDHERE" which should then close out of the new update available screen and take you to a screen where it says it's updating your apps. After that, the setup wizard will finish and you're free to use it.

As a side note, if you ever want to upgrade to Lollipop for some reason, then you will need to re-enable hudl.ota. To do this, just open a shell again and type in "pm enable hudl.ota".
